Zill Bags

After many years as a leatherworker, Kim Batchelor began making small zill bags for our dance troupe, Raks Sarama. There’s nothing worse for a dancer than loosing her zills!

Kim’s zill bags became so popular we decided to offer them on our website. These unique bags are made from vegetable tanned leather, and embellished with intricate natural designs. Kim cuts, punches, carves and tools the designs into each one, then hand-paints the designs using vegetable dyes, which are much longer lasting than leather paint. There is a sturdy metal snap closure and a leather lacing and bead handle, which can easily be slipped on a belt for convenient access. Kim can also carve and dye your name into the gusset, making it a truly individual, one-of-a-kind piece.

These small works of art are heirloom quality. Each standard size bag is 4” side to side, 3½” high, and approximately 2” deep. They make wonderful children’s purses, and men use them for all sorts of things too. They are small, sturdy and handy as well as beautiful and if cared for properly, can last many generations.

Kim also makes  a slightly larger bag (4” wide, 5” high, 2 ¼” deep). He can adapt your original artwork into the design, if you send a drawing or photograph. Each bag is specially created as the order comes in so please be patient. For additional information, and special orders, email Kim.
